I continued my tour of the Southeast last week with a layover in Huntsville, AL. With a little help from the hotel van driver, a local with a taste for soul food, my fellow crewmembers and I found ourselves at G’s Country Kitchen.
We received a warm and friendly welcome as soon as we walked in the door and were made to feel right at home. There was a constant line of locals picking up to go orders as well as dining in. This is a family owned place serving good ole’ Southern home cooking. The Coca Cola is syrupy and the tea is sweet, and that is definitely a good thing!
I ordered up a few of my favorites, fried chicken, collard greens, mac and cheese, cornbread and hushpuppies. Whoa, that’s a lot of food. The chicken is made to order, as are all fried foods at G’s, so additional time is necessary for the prep. It was well worth the wait. My fried chicken was delicious, as was my co-worker’s fried catfish.
Our bellies were full before we could finish everything on our plates. The portions at G’s are big, and I need to mention, the prices are way low!
So if you find yourself in Huntsville, AL, looking for a no frills, friendly place serving up authentic, good Southern home cooking, go to G’s! They are located at Oakwood Shopping Center at 2501 Oakwood Avenue NW.
