Last week it was another sunny and warm layover for me. This time it was Phoenix, AZ, or more specifically, Scottsdale. I’ve got to tell you, I worked for this layover. Up at 2:30 am, and on the road by 3:30 am, making the two hour drive to JFK during the tail end of an ice storm. Yep, sometimes Mother Nature is not on a flight attendant’s side. Thankfully, I made it safely to the airport and about seven hours later found myself in 88 degree Phoenix, and that was just fine with me. After a nap at my hotel, I went for a walk around Old Town Scottsdale, which is a touristy town filled with shops, galleries, and a lot of restaurants and bars.
My first stop was Hula’s Modern Tiki, where what grabbed my attention first was their perfectly styled sign. Hulas has a casual, fun and laid back atmosphere, with a beachy, Hawaiian vibe. Its’ indoor seating is open air with outdoor seating as well.
Happy Hour was going on so I opted for a Hula’s Mai Tai – three rums infused with pineapple and vanilla bean, topped with tropical juices and dark rum. It was very good, not overly sweet. I also ordered two appetizers from the HH menu, the Crispy Coconut Shrimp Rolls with pineapple horseradish dipping sauce and the Hawaiian Ceviche – fresh white fish, citrus juice, coconut milk, chili, cilantro and garlic served with Wonton Chips. Both were tasty, but the shrimp rolls were definitely my favorite. Crunchy and coconutty with a delicious flavor, and the sweet n’ hot dipping sauce was perfect for them.
If you’re in Scottsdale looking for something fun and casual, check out Hula’s! They’re located at 7213 East First Avenue.
