My love for the Stephen Starr collection of restaurants in Philadelphia continues with a recent visit to Barclay Prime. In town for the annual Philadelphia Flower Show, my husband, needing a bribe – ha! – and something to look forward to following an afternoon at the show, suggested we pay a visit to Barclay Prime for dinner. Well, okay . . . if you insist! Just kidding. I dream about eating at Barclay Prime on a regular basis. This is a restaurant so special, you are given a choice of knife with which to cut your perfectly cooked steak.
At the high end Barclay Prime, the decor and feel are modern, with books on shelves surrounding the seating area, creating a contemporary library like atmosphere. It all comes together and works with an end result of simple elegance and comfort.
After settling in and perusing the cocktail menu, which is lengthy, I made a choice based partly on name, The Walking Dead. How could I resist? It was an interesting blend of a Bacardi Rum trio, mango passion fruit infused tea, fresh lime, almond foam, star anise and fennel bitters. The result was amazing – looking and tasting!
Along with Barclay Prime’s signature popovers, we enjoyed the wedge salad as an appetizer, made all the better by our server, Mat’s, recommendation of combining Russian and blue cheese dressings.
For my main entree, my usual, filet medium rare. My husband’s choice, the rib eye, medium rare with blue cheese. Both were so perfectly prepared, such a high quality of meat, and so mouth watering delicious. We paired our entrees with a side of truffle mac and cheese, which was, of course, creamy, cheesy, with a flavorful essence of truffle, and beyond scrumptious!
Completely and satisfyingly stuffed, we declined dessert, but never fear, Barclay Prime doesn’t let you get away without a sweet treat from the chef. Passion fruit marshmallows. Wait. What???? Yes. The perfect ending to a perfect evening. Thank you to our server, Mat, the bartenders, back servers, and to the General Manager of Barclay Prime, Tom A., who we were so happy to see again! Barclay Prime is a well oiled machine that you simply must experience. They are located in Rittenhouse Square at 237 South 18th Street.
