A sure sign of spring in Cape May, NJ is the opening of the Bread Stand, as it is affectionately known to locals and visitors alike, who line up at least an hour before opening time to have a chance at purchasing the little loaves of goodness. The hours at Enfin Farms are seasonal and they sell out every day they’re open!
The bread is baked by Elizabeth Degener, a local whose family owns Enfin Farms. She uses an outdoor brick and clay wood fired oven and the results are amazing. Unique flavors like Curry, Fennel, Coconut Milk and Anise; Chocolate, Candied Ginger and Lavender; and Beet and Dill, just to name a few.
My advice is to get there early, take a place in line, and wait your turn to step up into the rustic stand and choose your bread, which is usually still warm from the oven. Elizabeth and her business partner, Wesley Laudeman, who handles the organic farming side of their enterprise, are usually there to package up their goods for you. They also have organic produce available.
Be sure to stop by the Bread Stand – Enfin Farms when you’re in Cape May. It’s a very cool experience and the bread is delicious. It is truly a labor of love! The schedule this spring is Fridays and Saturdays from 10:00 am until they’re sold out. They are located at 609 Sunset Boulevard.
