Memorial Day has come and gone and that means something of the utmost importance in Cape May, NJ. The Schooner is OPEN! This is another favorite Cape May experience I highly recommend.
Built in 1934, The Schooner American is an original “Grand Banker” class of fishing schooners. During the season, from late May through October, The Schooner American sits by the wharf at The Lobster House Restaurant in Cape May’s inner harbor. It’s one of the best places in Cape May for casual outdoor dining and drinking. I love nothing more than sitting on a stool at the quaint little bar enjoying their specialty, an Orange Crush. A simple mix of orange flavored vodka, triple sec, sprite and fresh squeezed orange juice. My favorite snack is the succulent jumbo lump crab cocktail with a side of The Lobster House’s mustard sauce.
Make it a point to get to The Schooner this summer in Cape May. It really is unique and there’s nothing like the feeling of sitting outside on the harbor, with the cool breeze blowing. It is usually cool, so you may want to bring a long sleeve shirt or sweater. There are great views in all directions, whether it be real commercial fishing boats unloading their haul, small boats passing through or large yachts moored nearby.
I personally like sitting at the bar. Bartenders Amanda and Meghan are normally there and are always welcoming and really, really efficient. It does get busy at the bar. There are also small tables for seating on The Schooner if you prefer.
The Schooner is located at The Lobster House Restaurant, outside on the harbor, at Fisherman’s Wharf, 906 Schellengers Landing Road.
